How to Clean Re-Usable Weaves

October 25, 2012 by admin

By Kehinde Victoria Adegbiyi

A weave is hair extension that you can add to your hair. You can sew or glue it. The purpose of adding weave is to create length or volume. Weaves come in different colors and lengths and are in two main categories – synthetic and human hair. The synthetic weaves are mainly produced with plastic fibers while the human hair is made with real human hair such as Indian Remy hair, Malaysian hair, Brazilian, Chinese and so on. However, there are some kinds of human hair that are called “mixed blend” because they have some synthetic fiber in them.

Weaves need the same type of care you would give to your own natural hair to keep a polished appearance. The material used to create the weaves will determine how you will care for them. Human hair can be washed and conditioned with same hair products you would use to clean your own hair. You will need to use products specifically made to clean synthetic fibre for synthetic weaves. Proper storage of your weaves is important if you plan to re-use them.

You should take the following steps to clean your re-usable weaves:

  1. Lather mild shampoo in your hands, and then apply to the hair in other to reduce scrubbing the hair together.
  2. Apply conditioner and leave for a few minutes, then rinsed out with cool water.
  3. Pat excess water from the hair and air dry. If you must blow dry, do not use too much heat and start drying from the roots to the ends to avoid pulling hair while wet.
  4. Spray weaves with a conditioning or finishing spray to keep them soft when you store them away.
  5. Do not brush or comb curly weave. Use your fingers to keep them in place.

Kinds Of Hair Fungi And How To Treat Them

October 15, 2012 by admin

By Kehinde Victoria Adegbiyi

What are fungi?

Tea Tree Oil

The Encarta Dictionaries defines Fungus (singular form) as a spore-producing organism, a single or multicellular organism without chlorophyll that reproduces by spores and lives by absorbing nutrients from organic matter. Fungi include mildews, molds, mushrooms, rusts, smuts and yeasts.

The Encarta Dictionaries also describes hair as strands growing on head or body and also, as the mass of fine flexible protein mass of growth from follicles on the skin of a person or animal especially those on the head.

kinds of hair fungi infection

  • Tinea Capititis (Ringworm)
  • Peidra
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis
  • Scalp psoriasis

Tinea Capititis is the most common type of fungal infection especially among children of school age due to lack of personal hygiene which children usually do not give importance to. It is a communicable disease which is easily transferred from an infected person to an uninfected person.

Tinea Capititis (Ringworm) is widely known among the Yoruba ethnic group of western Nigeria as Lapalapa, the name is a description of the look of the infected area (the round and ring shape). Medical research reveals that scalp ringworm is not caused by a worm as suggested by the name. It is caused by a Fungus called dermatophytes.

Ringworm (Tinea capititis) can be transmitted through contact with an infected person, fallen infected hair or contaminated objects. These may include objects such as instruments from the barbershop, hats, hairbrushes bedding and clothing. A contact alone with one of these carriers may not be enough to cause an infection but in a case where the scalp is scratched or tightly braided, spores can enter the layer of the skin. In which dermatophytes invade and digest the tissue’s keratine as the organisms grow. The fungi attack the outer layer of skin on the scalp and the hair shaft.

Symptoms

The patient suffering from Tinea Capititis may report symptoms such as:

  • Itching, which can be mild or severe or none.
  • Development of bumps and wounds having the shape of a circle or ring.
  • Redness of the scalp
  • Inflammation of the affected area.
  •  Lesions may get filled up with pus.
  • Dark spots on the scalp
  • Bald patches on the scalp

Usually, it appears as a small area, the size of a pea, the area will grow outwards on the scalp in a circle or ring shape.

Treatment

Antifungal tablets in combination with antifungal shampoo and or cream can be used in treating ringworm affecting the scalp. There are two main types of antifungal tablet.

  • Terbinafine
  • Griseofulvin

The type to be prescribed for an infected person depends on the type of fungi causing the infection.

Although antifungal shampoo and or cream cannot cure ringworm of the scalp, but it helps to prevent the infection from spreading and may speed up recovery. Antifungal shampoo and or cream should be used twice a week during the first two weeks of treatment.

Trending Hair Braiding Styles for Men and Women

October 13, 2012 by admin

By Julie Omoyeni
Hair braiding has been around for several years and some styles become more popular from time to time. Trending hair braiding styles are usually creative variations of regular braids or cornrows. Women of all ages (and men too) love these styles because they are cheap to maintain. Their versatility allows the wearer to choose from a variety of styles depending on the look that she wants to achieve.

Braiding is also a good style to choose if you want to give your natural hair adequate time to recover from the harshness of relaxers or other chemicals that are used for hair treatments. The desired braiding effect is basically achieved by laying three strands of hair alternatively over one another. Although there are now a lot of styles, the basic cornrow is done by weaving the hair flat on the scalp with appropriate parting and sectioning.

Trending Hair Braiding Styles for Ladies

The single or box twist is one of the styles that are popular with today’s women. Hair extensions are usually added so as to produce a fuller look. This style can be given a creative finish that makes it suitable for special occasions.

The zigzag is another style that is preferred by younger women. It can be worn for a longer time and is therefore suitable for busy ladies. It always has a beautiful finish no matter how the hair is sectioned.

The box twist can also be combined successfully with the cornrow to produce a stunning effect. It can be pinned up, spiral or curled. This style is recommended for women who have tender scalp. It is also a convenient style in the summer when the weather is humid and hot. This trending hair braiding style will allow your scalp to breathe. If your scalp gets itchy or sweaty, it can be washed and greased without loosening the braids.

Trending Hair Braiding Styles For Men

Men are not left out in the braiding trend. They usually prefer quick and neat designs like the fish bone or zigzag braids. The average male customer is not choosy unlike the women. They usually just tell the stylist to do any style that looks good. Most male customers will not like to sit in a salon for hours because of a hairdo. Those of them that request for a specific style usually pick the zigzag.

Braids are popular because they allow the scalp to breathe and are also very convenient. If you want to look sassy and up to date, this is the hairstyle that you should be wearing. If you want to enjoy your braids or cornrows, you have to know how to maintain them. Your hair should be washed properly and treated with an appropriate conditioner before putting in cornrows or braids. Heavy hair creams should not be used because they can weigh your hair down and cause flaky scalp. You will be more comfortable if you choose a style that is suitable for the texture and the length of your hair. Put your hair in a scarf before you go to bed and do not leave the braids on for longer than eight weeks.

How Adoptive Parents Can Manage Their Kids Kinky Hair

October 13, 2012 by admin

By Julie Omoyeni

Hair care is one of the challenges faced by adoptive parents of African-American children. Having the right knowledge will enable you to take good care of your child’s hair. Taking care of curly or kinky hair is not difficult, if you know what to do. If you follow the guidelines below, taking care of your toddler or teenager’s hair will become a more pleasant experience.

Washing and conditioning

You will need a good shampoo and conditioner for African-American hair. There are a lot of great products for this hair texture. You can buy recommended products at any retail store or order them directly online. If you use the right products, they will help to detangle the hair and make it softer.

Wash your child’s hair every week if she is not wearing braids. If you wash it too often, it may start losing too much moisture. After washing, apply conditioner and leave for about 20 minutes. This process makes it easy to comb. If your kid’s hair is kinky after washing, applying conditioner wil make it soft. Use a light hair cream that will help to keep the scalp healthy. The hair grease will also help to lock in more moisture to make the hair more manageable.

Stick to simple hair styles

If your little girl or boy has long hair, simple styles will make it easier for you to manage their hair. Kids are naturally impatient and may not like to sit still for elaborate hair styles. So, choose styles that are simple and made within a short period. Some of the styles that you can consider include plaits, braids, twist and Afro puffs. If it is necessary for you to create a more elaborate style for a special occasion, you may consider braided cornrows. Braided cornrows may take longer to make but they require very little maintenance. Also, consider a braiding shop for professional service. It reduces the stress of combing every morning and promotes the hair growth.

Low-cut styles are very suitable for boys and they require minimal maintenance. The hair has to be brushed carefully every day with a bristle brush. You can wash your boy’s hair everyday during shower if he has low-cut, otherwise, you can consider braiding his hair into cornrows.

Use the right Accessories

Comb your African-American children’s hair with a wide-tooth comb or a plastic pick if the hair is short. Comb gently and avoid tugging. Start at the bottom of the hair and loosen tangled portions as you move towards the scalp. Don’t use metallic ponytail holders or headbands. You will avoid puling and breakageif you make use of plastic holders and elastic headbands.

Be careful with chemicals and extensions

It may seem sensible to put a texturizer or relaxer in African-American children’s hair to make it easier to manage. However, this is not a very good idea. The scalp and the texture of a child’s hair go through some changes until he or she is about 8 years old. The likelihood for damage is high when chemicals are used at this age. If you have to use these chemicals, make sure you look for those for little children and consult with a professional.

Note on Products

Go to ethnic beauty supply store for products for your African-American kids. You can even ask for advice from hair braiders. Shop at other large retail stores like Walmart, Target and Walgreens if you don’t live nearby an ethnic beauty supply store.

How To Know Your Type Of Hair

October 13, 2012 by admin

By Julie Omoyeni

Most women and men are mindful of their hair and they always want it to look good. If it is your dream to have hair that you will always be proud of, there are a number of things that you have to know. The starting point of having great hair is to know the type of hair that you have. The following are the different ways of categorizing hair types.

Racial classification

Hair can be classified according to racial origins. It could be African, Asian or Caucasian. African hair is normally black and dry with very tight curls (kinky). The most common type of Asian hair is black and straight, but there are also some that could be wavy and curly. Caucasian hair is the most diverse category. It has a lot of variations in color and texture.

Classification by the body of the hair

Hair can also be distinguished by the type of body that it has. It could be straight, curly or wavy. Straight hair usually shines more because the natural oil is evenly distributed. Natural oil is not easily distributed in wavy and curly hair. Your hair can achieve any type of body with the availability of curling irons and other styling instruments. However, it is not advisable to change styles too frequently especially if the styling is achieved with the use of chemicals or the exposure of the hair to heat. It can easily cause damage to your hair.

Normal, Dry and Oily Hair

Hair can also be differentiated by the amount of natural oil that it has. Dry hair is highly susceptible to breakage and damage. Individuals who have dry hair are usually advised not to wash their hair too frequently. It is also important to ensure that you use hair products that are recommended for your hair type. On the other hand, oily hair has to be washed frequently with a mild shampoo.

Classification By Thickness

The different types of hair texture are fine, medium or coarse. Fine hair does not have too much volume and can be damaged easily. It also does not hold styles very well. People who have medium hair seem to be the luckiest. This type of hair is very style friendly. It naturally has good volume and can hold almost any type of hairstyle. If you have medium hair, you can wear it in an almost unlimited number of ways. All you have to do is to choose a style that suits you. Individuals with coarse hair have to depend on conditioners in order to make it more controllable.

These are the different classifications of hair types. It is vital to know the type of hair that you have. There are a number of simple tests that you can perform if you want to determine the type that you have. If you are not sure of the type that you have, your hairstylist can easily test it for you. When you know your type of hair, you will be able to give it the type of care that it requires. You will have to learn how to choose the right hair care products as well as the styles that are appropriate for you.
